Yesterday Richard had to go to Dubai on business and I thought mmmmm there is a quilt show on in Dubai, I think I will come along for a ride. The drive over was interesting.( we hired a driver for the day) as we hurtled down the highway at 150km/hr with cars whooshing by us!! I don't know if I will ever be brave enough to drive here, you need to be able to turn right from the far left lane and left from the far right lane but there seems to be a courtesy and understanding that I guess you need to become familiar with.

First port of call for me was some lunch at a wonderful sushi bar "Sumo"

This amazing bag shop was opposite the resturant...may need to revisit this. The colours were amazing.

I have had a quiet week, just a few strolls around the area we are staying but I have been very productive with my needle and thread!

I mentioned a few weeks ago I was coming to the middle east to spend some time with my husband, who is working over here at the moment. Things move slowly and it has taken 3 weeks longer than I expected.I was sooo organised but have packed and unpacked several times and then when the time came I was a tad disorganised and forgot a few things. Richard is pleased I didn't remember everything as I had my suitcase full to pussy's bow and snuck quite a few things into his! Who needs clothes over here, it is still quite warm at this time of the year.I did leave a thin space at the top of the suitcase for a shirt or 2 but I have enough sewing for months and am so looking forward to a quiet time with my needle and thread during the day, then some sight seeing in the evenings. It might take me a few weeks to find my way around so stay tuned and hopefully I will find some lovely places to show.

My new pattern is almost ready.

Just in time for Valentines Day.

But if you're not feeling the love this year, maybe this is more for you.

And then there's this one...

This pattern includes the whole alphabet so you can make your own creation, and although I turned my panels into cushions these could make fabulous wall hangings or even the beginning of a quilt.

Lucy took these photos yesterday in the sunshine, so this one must have snuck in between cushion shots!

I think these should be ready to go by tomorrow afternoon, so keep an eye out for them in store and online.

I've been busy.
Tied to my sewing machine, busy.

It's finally together. My next Block of the Month, Gypsy Wife.

This one has been a bit of a journey for me. I broke my shoulder about a quarter of the way through designing it, commencement was pushed back and I know people have been patiently waiting... but here it is. It's just the quilt top, I know and some loose thread are still popping out of seams but it's done!

This quilt is wild! Has a real vintage quality to it and reminds me of something you'd find in a Gypsy's caravan... hence the name!

Lucy is signing up people now for this one.
It's a 12 month program at $40 per month including postage and handling ($45 for our International fans), I have about 98% of the original fabrics put aside for this one so pretty much what you see is what you get!
It's designed to be put together by machine and the instructions will be written this way but I will also include hand piecing templates for my hand sewers!

Just a little news about some up and coming classes.

Susan Smith will be teaching a class on Sunday the 26th of Feb.
She will be teaching her Clamshells quilt which is an old English style of Quilt worked in the tradition manner without papers.
This class will run from 10 am - 3 pm and is $90 student.

We're also proud to announce that Sarah Fielke will be coming to teach in April. She will be helping students work on Dolly Quilts from her book 'From Little Things'.
This class will be on April the 11th, from 10 am - 3 pm and is $90 per student.

Please note that places are limited so get in quick as I am sure both these will be hugely popular!

Desperately seeking

To all my creative and clever customers (I hear flattery will get you everywhere),

I need your help is locating some fabrics and I am hoping that somebody, somewhere will help us out from their stash!

First, this lovely Liberty of London. Just a small 20 cm cut is needed.

Second is a Kaffe Fassett.

This one is going to quite an incredible quilt we've shown before on the Amitie blog. Here's an update of Christine's 'Insanity'.

Projects

So we survived Christmas (more to come on this - forgot my camera cable so you'll have to wait another day or 2!) and after a lovely 4 day break it's back to the shop. We are open except for the public holidays so come in and see us if you need anything.

Jo came in to see us with her finished quilt. This one is subtle in colour and so spectacular.

And the back is almost as beautiful as the front.

Another gorgeous quilt walked in the door recently (to somebody who shall remain nameless as it's a gift and we cannot give it away). Very different to the last - bright and cheerful with big piecing. Incredibly beautiful!

This quilt presented an interesting question - how many quilters does it take to pick a binding?

In the end it came down to two choices, and finally it was decided that the grey would do the job.

Now... what colour Perle?

It hasn't only been beautiful quilts walking in the door - we've been getting a lot of fabric deliveries with a lot more to come over the coming weeks. These few have really caught my eye. So fun in the greatest colour combos. Lucy will have them on the web soon, or feel free to call the store if you'd like some ($34.50 per meter, linen cotton blend).

And as for me - I have been busy preparing for my departure. I will be off to the Middle East soon with Richard, my husband. There's a lot to do before I take off. Gypsy wife, my next BOM is on the sewing machine getting finished so keep an eye out for that one!

I am also planning some hand piecing for when I am away. This has been interesting for me as usually I choose fabric as I go, auditioning this with that, and taking things as I need them. Of course I can't do this as I will be on the other side of the world!

What's on the agenda for this quilt? Lots of fussy cutting! I have created some little windows to help me visualize and pick prints - such a great idea for all of you fussy cutters out there.

My earliest memories are connected with fabric and textiles. I remember a very few things way back, but inevitably what fabric I was wearing. The blue rose party dress with multiple petticoats and the brown corduroy and tartan Sunday school dress (with matching hat and gloves of course). I fell in love with Liberty working in the city in the 70’s and would run up the hill during my lunch hour to buy some. Jobs Warehouse, not too far away, always gave up some memorable treasures.

At first I dabbled in dressmaking, though without much talent. It was when my children were very young and I had exhausted every other crafty pursuit that I stumbled upon patchwork and quilting. It was love at first stitch! That love continues, working and teaching at Amitie Textiles and designing patterns. I meet many “can’t thread a needle” women in my classes and watch them go on to make beautiful and colourful quilts. My style I suppose is fairly classic, I love reds and blues with linen and quirky Japanese fabrics. The most fun to be had I think is playing with all colours and putting them together watching a beautiful quilt emerge.

Family Recipe: Greek style roast chicken with lemon

Gadget: My new Pfaff (is there a size limit on gadgets?)

Fabric: Liberty and the new one I see tomorrow!

Recipe:

GREEK CHICKEN WITH LEMON

1 chicken cut into 10 pieces

4 large red onions

2 lemons

Kalamata olives, pitted

Garlic

Olive oil

Sea salt and ground black pepper

Rosemary

couscous

Brown garlic in pan with chicken (skin removed)

Move to a baking tray.

Peel onions and cut up into large segments

Add a handful of olives

Squeeze over the juice of 1 lemon

Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and add

Drizzle olive oil and add salt and pepper

Add fresh rosemary

Place into over on 180 and cook for 1 1/2 hours, turning the chicken and onions over from time to time

Serve with couscous.

We've constantly got the most beautiful projects walking in and out the door here at Amitie - it's so lovely to see so many different creative people with so many different ideas. It can be a little hard to keep up, and more often than not we're so overwhelmed by the beauty of these things that grabbing the camera slips our mind.

I was away on the weekend. Yes, lucky enough to be away on another Lancefield retreat. I can't share with you what I was working on, as I am keeping it hush hush until it's published but here's a few snaps (some taken on my iPhone so please excuse the quality) of what others were working on.

Catherine had her lovely feathered stars.

These blocks are just beautiful - even from the back.

Catherine has a lovely eye for colour, here's a sneak peak of her next project. Yum, yum, yum!

Deb was busy with a Don't Look Now pattern.

And Aileen was working on a lovely purple braid.

Cathy from Cabbage Quilts joined us this retreat. She was working on a beautiful Kim McLean pattern. Love the pieced background!

The weekend was a great success and I hope everybody who came had a fantastic time.

Recently Sue and Jan popped in to visit us at Amitie and I was quite taken by the tiny stars they'd both been working on.

And Jenny S from my class has tackled Pickle Dish, and is hand quilting for the first time!

Life has been a bit of a whirlwind since returning from the states. So much to catch up on around the store at Amitie, and then there was a few family things too but I have managed to get some sewing done... what bliss!

I've been working on another project for a publication. Due date is looming, so this has taken up a lot of my time! I'm not sure if I can show you the whole project but I thought a few sneak peaks might be nice.

Sue Spargo 2012

Market is over, and it's been nice to have some time off and do a little stitching while the George R Brown Convention centre prepares for Festival.

It's been a fantastic market for many reasons but one that stands out so clearly in my mind is catching up with my dear friend, Sue Spargo.
Sue has confirmed she's coming back to teach in August 2012. She will be coming to Amitie to teach her beautiful ways of embellishment once again and I cannot wait!

Amy Butler's new range 'Lark' is lovely and her booth didn't disappoint.

Amy's husband David is a familiar face at market but this time he's launched his own fabric under the name Parson Gray. This range is beautiful and will be in store at Amitie come release date!

Anna Maria's Lou Lou Thi range was a real hit with us, and her velveteens from this range are no different. I had to drag Lucy out of this booth, I think she would have happily touched everything there!

Lucy and I are here in Houston and the weather is a surprise with a cold breeze blowing. Today we had "schoolhouse". This is the day where we get to see new products, fabric ranges and patterns. Designers give small demonstrations and talks about their products and inspiration. I attended several but Lotta Jansdotta got me thinking when she asked the question "do you know exactly what your customers want" She went on to say ask "what is their favourite colour" . I realised I don't know, so the question to you is

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR??

You may give more than one answer because I would not be able to restrict myself to one. I would love to know and let's see if the fabric shelves at amitie reflect your thoughts.

I am off to Quilt Market in Houston, Texas on Wednesday. I always love these trips away, seeing/meeting the people who inspire me to do what I do, friends I've met in this industry and familiar faces.

This year we have a slight problem, I am taking Lucy on her first work related trip so look out Houston!

I am planning some hand piecing for the plane trip and nights spent in the hotel room.

a weekend away

Last weekend was one of our Lancefield retreats. I love going to Lancefield - it's so nice to put your feet up, not have to work, do dishes, make the bed, worry about what's for dinner and on top of all that have a whole weekend dedicated to sewing.

It was such a productive weekend with so many projects coming together so quickly.

Nic's elephant quilt was together in next to no time!

Mindy was working on a beautiful Fans quilt which went from this...

To this in record time.

Rae was working on my Broken Glass pattern.

Loving all the red in it!

And Jen R was putting together a bright version of my Marianne pattern.

As the day rolls on and you get lost in your project and conversation, the lovely staff come and let you know that your meal is ready and the food is just heaven.

But of course this weekend was about sewing!

Helen was embellishing one of my favourite fabrics - the Megu Printed linen.

Of course with sewing weekends there's always a little show and tell.. and with show and tell, comes paparazzi!

Karen has been busy with my Circle Game blocks but doing them in soft and gentle fabrics producing a quilt that is totally to die for.

I have a lot more photos from this weekend but might have them for another day otherwise it might be quilt photo overload and the keyboard can't handle the drool!.

Last week my Niece Michelle came to visit with her 4 children and partner Brett. It's always so lovely to have them stay and this time was no exception.
Ruby, Michelle's middle, came to visit the shop one night and thought she'd try her hand at quilting, and what a marvelous job she's done!

She planned this dolly quilt herself, and has finished it in record time!
Well done Miss Ruby. Aunty Jen is very, very proud.

This quilt is beautiful with soft colours and beautiful folk art imagery. It has such a lovely retro feel to it!

Yes, we're finally into our new shop. It's been an interesting week with not much going to plan but after a few long days we're here and we love it. It feels like home already.
I could explain the move blow by blow but we don't have all day so I thought I'd share the photos we managed to capture (although, we did forget to take a photo when every bolt of fabric was piled in the middle of the shop at 7pm Tuesday night... Have I mentioned we opened at 9.30am Wednesday)!

I've always loved supporting local crafty types. So many of the girls making it big now I can say "I taught her", and it really makes my heart sing. This is a little different, as I've never taught anybody how to make a hat but I am still equally as impressed!
Nat is a friend of my daughter's and she's embarked on her own small business.

She's started making the most beautiful fascinators, and with the racing season just around the corner I thought I would spread the word about her beautiful creations.

getaway and catching up

I have been a busy bee these past few weeks. Juggling a move with a broken shoulder has been a little bit of a nightmare but we're getting there... slowly but surely we're getting there.

I was lucky enough to be treated by one of my Daughters, Abby. She took me away to Daylesford. I think it was an attempt to cheer me up as it was very soon after my fall. We had a lovely night away where we ate beautiful food, drank some lovely wine and got pampered.

Can you tell the desserts were a real favourite of mine?

The weeks since my getaway have been a bit of a whirlwind. I do remember to take photos of things around me but I have been struggling to find the time to blog about them.

Clare from my Thursday class has finished her Parterre and doesn't it look great?

Lucy's girlfriend Kath came along to Jodie's Donkey class and was the only person to finish hers in the day.

Jodie will be back October 1st to teach another class. This time it's her gorgeous Elephant pattern. Please call the shop if you'd like to come along. Places are limited!

It's no crime in pointing out that we're all time poor. By the time you get to work, get home, do the grocery shopping, feed the kids (or in my case, adults), do the dishes, the clothes washing there's barely any time to stitch... and let me tell you, being a one arm bandit has not helped either!

We will be launching our 2 new Block of the Month programs at the end of August - thought I might pop a bit of a sneak peak online for all to see.

My new block of the month isn't completed yet. For those that haven't heard on the grape vine, I have fractured my right shoulder so of course progress on sewing projects has come to a stand still. But I can show you what I have done.

This quilt has been designed so that you can either hand or machine piece it. It's called 'Gypsy Wife' and is $40 AUD per month ($45 AUD if you live overseas, which I know some of my BOMers do). It's a 12 month program.

The other BOM is called The Aunts Quilt and is designed by Gina Gregory, one of the many talented staff here at Amitie.

This quilt is very beautiful with a lovely mix of applique and pieced blocks. It too is $40 AUD per month ($45 AUD for O/S) and is a 12 month program.

Rockin Robin Round 3 has just been sent to anybody who has signed up.
This is a free PDF pattern we're emailing out for all our loyal fans. The quilt is being handed from staff member to staff member for them to add their own border on to a medallion style quilt.
I did the middle block, Gina Gregory was next and added a beautiful folk art inspired applique border and the baby of the team (also my baby at home) Lucy has added a machine pieced border.

I have always been a lover of Anna Maria Horner's fabrics and this range is no exception.

I can't wait to use it! A few of the prints are going in my next Block of the Month which will be revealed at Melbourne's Craft and Quilt fair next week.

Lucy is busy cutting pre-cut 30cm pieces of this entire range for the show. Yes, my Lu Lu is cutting Lou Lou!

The lack of posts might have made some of you believe I was still in Denver... I guess I was happy pretending I was still away but no, I am back and in full swing.

Life is busy here at Amitie but lucky for me I came home to the most beautiful surprise.

The lovely Louise had me for the Down Under Doll Quilt Swap 2 and I was so happy with what she made me.
I love my Football team, Collingwood - and I love my Collingwood Doll Quilt with the club song embroidered on it!

Some of the most stunning architecture and so varied

The botanical gardens are world renown and after a casual stroll around them I understand why.

This is Someday ( some day I will own a dog). He is a lovely gentle thing, loving and caring......

until there is thunder, then he becomes a home wrecker! We arrived home to find the computer upside down, the timber blinds broken and the curtains in both the living room and the kitchen torn to shreds. He did do a very neat job on these ones, both the lining and silk torn straight across. Last time it was the plantation shutters.( needs a job in window dressing). Just as well you are loved so much Someday!!

I had a good look around Salt Lake City and visited a small quilt museum. Above are some of the quilts on display. Not so sure about the squirrel one?? Made by a 13 year old girl who apparently hunted the furry creatures then made a quilt from the skins.

This is Carolyn Forster from The UK who was at market promoting her new book "utility quilting" which will be available soon. Carolyn is doing my BOM " the circle game " so it was lovely to meet her in person.

I am now in Denver visiting friends and on Tuesday evening Fancy Tiger has a craft evening so we went along and joined the knitters, embroiderers, crocheters and stitchers. It was a really nice evening. These are just some of the wonderful images this talented lady embroidered onto her toile skirt.

This is a really beautiful city. I open the curtains each morning and there are the mountains right in front of me.

Quilt market is a busy place. Here we are day one all full of anticipation at what we may see within. I have purchased some great things to bring back so everyone can be excited

I also had the pleasure of spending time with my friend Sue, and her stand as always, stood out in the crowd.

Been a busy little bee quilting and binding my Down Under Doll Quilt project.

I have had so much fun with this one and can't wait to find out what my partner thinks.

PatchAndi and her monday scraptacular

Andi Herman from PatchAndi has joined our list of talented teachers here at Amitie.

Andi will be teaching a class called The Monday Spectacular. It'll be a fun class that can help us all use our HUGE scraps. A little bit of stash management never went astray, right (and should keep the husbands happy)!

Andi's class will be Monday afternoons from 12.30 - 3 pm, $27.50 per class!

Above is one of Andi's beautiful creations and is an example of what you could create in The Monday Scraptacular! For as long as I can remember my family have spent Good Friday every year with my parents best friends. It has become a tradition and something I look forward . This is my dear Auntie Maev and Gwen. It makes me a little sad that my parents are no longer with us but I do treasure still having these ladies

and this is the beginnings of new traditions. Meet baby Lewis....my newest family member. He is my great nephew, and is much loved by us all especially his big brothers and sister.

I couldn't put him down....so cute.

busy weekend and a new baby

Spent the weekend visiting the guilds. Saturday, I was off to The Bay Quilters guild to hear Jinny Beyer speak and have a small stand to share some of our new favourite products with the ladies. Then on Sunday, Lucy and I were off to South Melbourne to participate in the Sit and Sew Day with the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild. Lots of friendly faces at this one and lots of creativity!

sorry for the absent updates over the last few days but we have both been suffering from something we can only assume we caught from the camel kiss! or may be something we ate. We have been no further than the room and have seen the bathroom far too often if you get what I mean, but tonight we ventured out to the Central souk for a short visit. I hope you enjoy

we were picked up at the hotel and the first stop after a lengthy drive was at a camel farm, unfortunately there was little to no english spoken so we didn't get any info. This chap was very friendly...a little too so!

After the camel farm came the dune bashing, it was really good fun until

a flat tyre. what a job this was to change on a soft surface. The men dug out the tyre but as fast the hole filled

it gave us some time to discover on foot, but not too far as it was quite hot.

the cars travel in pairs and I now know why. Within 15 minutes our companion car got stuck. everyone out again and a long and difficult tow started.

we all sat and watched the sun set which was spectacular.

we eventually got to camp for some dinner, belly dancing and some good aussie beer and Jacobs Creek wine

after a lovely day we set off home..........only to have a second flat tyre on the highway but it was
such an enjoyable day!!

While Richard is at work I am getting some time to sew. It is such a lovely thing to sit with very little in my mind except the rhythm of the stitch. I know my girls back home will be taking very good care of everything so I am completely relaxed, although the news of the Japan disaster is disturbing. I have sent an email to our Japanese family but guess it will be difficult to get a reply, I just hope they are all safe.

a lengthy post about brunch

the weekend starts here on friday and brunch is a big thing for both the locals and the expat community.

this morning we went to the Fairmont hotel to partake. This is the grand mosque which I intend to visit later in the week.

Just to give perspective about the size of the hotel....this is the hall

I went to the gold souk but unfortunately was not allowed to photograph inside for security reasons. Talk about bling!!

market stalls at the souk next door, this seemed to be an area for textiles as well

window display at one of the many fabric stores. It is hard to buy cotton here, lots of synthetics with sequins and jewels.I forgot to bring a piece of black but did manage to find some eventually so can continue with my project.

first impressions

We arrived at 6am. The weather to my delight is cool for this time of year. The view out of the hotel window is spectacular although it has been a little overcast so the photos don't show to their best.

This mosque is just around the corner and the morning call to prayer is such a lovely sound. Much better than the noisy minor I wake to at home!!

The amount of building and construction is incredible. Cranes everywhere. I snapped this out of the taxi window which is not easy as they drive incredibly fast. Something I will need to get used to. The road rules are a little scarey.....people seem to drive where ever they want, especially at the roundabouts.
So far so good. I am enjoying Abu Dhabi very much. We are just about to go to a shopping mall and a market so will have some more photos to show.

my bags are packed...well almost

my clothes are still on the clothes line, and I am not sure what I really need. Madly rotary cutting fabric....it is so hard to choose for an entire project. I rely so heavily on being able to go to my stash if something is not quite right

but the most important thing is that my sewing gets packed. Richard is working OS at the moment so I thought I would go on a little vacation with him.

This past week we have had the pleasure of hosting Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably in Melbourne.

What a sunset we organised on their first night.

Brandon...always the clown with Nikki's hand bag. It was a hairpiece for both head and chest then became a poodle as the night went on.

Both Kaffe and Brandon are so observant. I think I have been walking around with my eyes closed. This was something that caught their eye on Ackland St StKilda

We all enjoyed a Thai foot massage at the end of a day at the galleries.

Both the workshop and the lecture were fabulous and I know everyone enjoyed themselves. We have had lots of calls and messages of delight today. If you want to see more of the workshop photos check out

Cloudhill

A friend and I had a lovely day off together and we went to Cloudhill in Olinda. It is the most wonderful garden and I could have spent the entire day there but lunch called!!

This peaceful corner with not a lot of colour but so gorgeous with all the different shades of green and various leaf textures.

Around each corner is another wonderful vista.

A breading pair?? we will see how they go. I couldn't resist these and I purchased some of the cutest mushrooms.

It is well worth a visit if you are in the Dandenong ranges.

Happy New Year to everyone. It is so lovely when you have a little time to spend creating. We saw several quilts and projects through the door between Christmas and New Year as everyone had a few days to themselves. Karen had time to be making the BOM in 3 colourways.

This is Sue's first ever quilt.

Over 10000 pieces will be in this finished project that Christine is doing. How great do the Kaffes look in those tiny hexxies.

It is lovely to see some of our patterns made up in different colourways.

Leonie was on a roll, this was quilt number 3 in the school holidays. The other 2 have been hand quilted and finished. She does need a physio for her sore muscles!!
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and I look foward to 2011 and many more great quilts and things, and great times.

Gina Gregory Profile:

I was raised in an unconventional household by a politically active, feminist Mother (and Father) who, none-the-less, encouraged her daughters into the domestic crafts. We were often knitting, sewing crocheting and painting – though probably crafting a peace symbol rather than a doily.
I made a few patchwork pieces in my teens; my first was a small, paper-pieced hexagon quilt of which I painted each individual hexagon. However my passion developed with exposure to antique quilts while living in the USA in the early 80’s. Then , after the birth of my first daughter in 1984, I took a class at a local quilt shop and have had several quilts on the go since.
My preference is for hand piecing, so my output can be quite modest especially as I always find it difficult to balance finishing off one quilt with the excitement of starting a new one.
Inspired by antique quilts, textiles, vintage fabrics and my collection of old aprons I enjoy designing me own appliqué quilts. I would describe my style as naïve with an emphasis on visual vitality rather than following the rules and worrying about the size of my stitches.
I am very lucky to have quilting aunts, sisters and many friends. They have encouraged me to teach and challenge myself. For me, quilting is both solitary and a companionable activity. One providing endless creative possibilities and the simple pleasure of one stitch after the other.

As usual I am planning to get 45 projects done in this time!! It is so nice when there is not a lot to do after all the Christmas cleaning (boy do I have a lot of this to do before though) and cooking has been attended and we can all have a rest and relax. Unfortunately you can't see the rain or smell the wonderfully fresh smell of it either. We have been in drought for so many years now every time it rains I can't help standing and soaking in the sight. The gardens are all brimming with blooms which we haven't seen for so long. Everything looks so healthy and happy.

I was in Lancefield with a great group of girls for a stitching weekend and look who else was there!!! You never know who you might see when you are having fun. Mrs Ric Rac tried to make me envious by mentioning that they had a massage therapist at their venue but look what we had. mmmmmmmm
